THE TANZANIA Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) has initiated a review of the Postal sector’s legal and regulatory framework to support emerging business models, the Authority's Director General, Dr Jabiri Bakari, says.

Dr Bakari explains that the objective was ensure compliance, service quality standards and promote the Postal sector’s long-term sustainability.

He in Dar Es Salaam yesterday that TCRA’s commitment to enforcing robust Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, which are key to the sustainable growth of postal and courier operations. The Pan African Postal Union (PAPU) celebrates 46sup>th/sup> Anniversary, this month since its establishment.

He says that TCRA promotes efficiency-enhancing measures. These include route optimization, the adoption of energy-efficient and low-emission delivery vehicles, sustainable infrastructure development, and responsible packaging and waste management.

TCRA also prioritizes universal access to postal services, he added.

Dr Bakari describes the postal sector as vital in promoting inclusive growth as it connects businesses, people and consumers, supporting cross-border trade.

It also facilitated electronic commerce at all levels by ensuring reliable last-mile delivery, particularly to rural and underserved communities, he notes.

He explains how strategic and strong partnerships among government institutions, private courier operators, digital platforms, and development partners can unlock new opportunities in the postal sector.

“These partnerships support the growth of the digital economy and the development of a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable postal ecosystem," he says.

He reiterates TCRA’s commitment to advancing regional cooperation and regulatory harmonization through regional and international communications organizations, These include PAPU, the East African Communications Organization (EACO) and the Communications Regulators’ Association of Southern Africa (CRASA).

“Harmonizing regulatory frameworks, converging technologies and operational standards, and coordinating cross-border postal and courier operations are essential to improving interoperability,” he states.

He adds that they are also key in reducing regulatory barriers, enhancing efficiency in cross-border mail exchange, facilitating the smooth flow of goods and services and strengthening intra-African trade.
