Enhancing Regulatory Capacity Through TCRA's Participation in ITU-PP 22

Bucharest: The International Telecommunications Union Plenipotentiary Conference (ITU-PP), which convenes every four years has begun this Monday in Bucharest, Romania's capital city. The ITU PP is the highest decision-making body of the ITU.

The United Republic of Tanzania (URT) is participating with hope for contributing in enhancing global policy and regulatory framework governing ICT, particularly in a time where telecommunications technologies are developing quickly. The ITU PP-22 meeting will give the URT, together with other 193 ITU member nations, a strategic viewpoint for running the telecommunications sector. ITU is the United Nations specialized agency for information and communications technologies (ICTs).

With delegates from around the world pursuing digital cooperation and transformation for the good of all, TCRA is expected to obtain global insights that she would use to promote the most cutting-edge and innovative communication technology necessary for Shaping global digital growth.

ITU's 21sup>st/sup> Plenipotentiary Conference, known as “PP-22", will provide TCRA with a strategic perspective for managing the nation's telecommunications industry according the regulatory Director General Dr. Jabiri Bakari.

In this year’s Conference Governments and nations will make coordinated decisions during the meeting about the crucial topics that will shape our digital future. Governments from throughout the globe will reach consensus on radio and satellite harmonisation, telecom standards, and digital development in the vital venue provided by PP-22.

ITU PP-22 takes place at a time when Tanzania has already prepared the way for newer, quicker telecommunications technology that is 5G; that, up until now, only a few African nations have adopted. In order to help Tanzania, advance the roll-out of this eagerly awaited telco technology, the summit will shed additional light on the path ahead of it.

The Director General of TCRA stated, "As this conference commences, we anticipate immense guidance in the telecommunications industry." He emphasised that ITU-PP 22 is an important opportunity for Telco Regulatory not only in Tanzania, but internationally, to have a unified perspective on the regulation of the prestigious telecommunication sector.

Among other events, the election for the next Secretary-General of the ITU is scheduled to begin on Thursday, September 29 in the morning. The ITU's senior management team will thereafter be elected.

After the conclusion of all elections, an estimated 2,500 delegates from the ITU's 193 Member States will decide on the organization's strategic and budgetary plans, as well as its four-year plan for linking the world.

At the Conference, the Tanzanian delegation is led by the Ministry of Information, Communications and Information Technology, collaborating with other Ministries including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Institutions under the Ministry of Information including the Tanzania Communications Authority (TCRA), TTCL, UCSAF and the ICT Commission among other institutions concerned with ICTs.
