Dar es Salaam.
Tanzania’s digital journey continues to gain momentum, with the number of internet users reaching an all-time high of 54.1 million by the end of the fourth quarter of the 2024/2025 financial year, according to the latest statistics from the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA). This milestone marks a significant leap from 29 million users in 2020, reflecting the country’s sustained investment in digital infrastructure and growing public demand for internet-based services.
Over the past five years, Tanzania has witnessed a consistent surge in internet penetration, driven by expanding mobile broadband coverage, decreasing smartphone costs, and increased public awareness of digital opportunities. From 2020 to 2024, the country added more than 25 million new users, translating into an average annual growth of over 6 million internet subscribers.
This growth has been largely fueled by the widespread availability of 4G and 5G networks, expansion of fiber-optic infrastructure, and increased efforts by mobile network operators and the government to promote affordable data access.
The rise in internet connectivity has had far-reaching implications across Tanzania’s economy and society. In urban centers and remote communities alike, internet access has become a lifeline for education, Agriculture, Finance, commerce, healthcare, and governance.
Internet access is no longer a luxury — it is a fundamental enabler of development. We are working to ensure every Tanzanian, regardless of location, can harness the benefits of connectivity.” TCRA Director General Dr. Jabiri Bakari
Digital platforms have revolutionized how Tanzanians conduct business — from mobile money services and e-commerce platforms to digital marketing and remote working opportunities. Thousands of youth and women entrepreneurs now rely on online platforms to sell products, access markets, and participate in the digital economy.
In the education sector, the internet has opened up new frontiers for e-learning, giving students and teachers access to global knowledge resources. Similarly, the health sector has benefited through improved access to telemedicine, health information systems, and online consultations.
The government, through TCRA and the Ministry of Information, Communication and Information Technology, has played a pivotal role in creating a conducive environment for digital expansion. Initiatives like digital clubs a platform for students to obtain knowledge on areas of Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics, Girls inclusivity in forums like Girls in ICT and Cyber champion’s competitions are among of vital initiatives.
Speaking recently, TCRA’s Director General emphasized that the Authority remains committed to ensure that digital transformation is inclusive and secure, stating:
Statistics show that the number of women, youth, and rural citizens accessing internet services continues to increase, thanks to government efforts through TCRA to promote investment in the communications sector
"Recently, we conducted a spectrum auction in which the participating and successful companies are set to expand the coverage of their services, especially in underserved areas, and enhance the provision of 5G services.” TCRA Director General Dr. Jabiri Bakari
With internet users now making up more than 60% of the population, Tanzania is on the cusp of a fully-fledged digital economy. Experts indicates that the current wave of growth is driven by 5G technology, expansion of data centers, cloud computing, and e-government services that improve public service delivery.
However, as connectivity grows, so too does the need for enhanced cybersecurity, data protection, and digital literacy. The TCRA has pledged to strengthen regulatory frameworks that support innovation while protecting users’ rights and promoting responsible digital usage.
