The airwaves of Tanzania are set to crackle with clearer sound and wider reach, as the Ministry of Information, Communication and Information Technology announced plans to embrace Digital Sound Broadcasting (DSB) technology. This exciting development was revealed by Deputy Minister, Hon. Engineer Kundo Mathew (MP), during the recent Annual Broadcasting Conference (ABC) held in Dodoma.
The move towards DSB is a strategic response to address two key challenges: limited radio frequency availability, especially in urban areas, and the need to bring radio content to a broader audience. With traditional FM frequencies becoming increasingly congested, DSB offers a versatile solution by utilising various communication infrastructures for content delivery. This opens up exciting possibilities for new stations and wider coverage, potentially reaching every corner of the country.
Kundo said while embracing technological advancements, the Government remains committed to upholding high-quality and ethically sound content. Deputy Minister Mathew emphasised the crucial role broadcasters play in shaping public discourse, particularly during national and local Government elections. He urged broadcasters in the country to act responsibly and disseminate accurate information when elections come.
On his part the Manager of Broadcasting Services at TCRA, Engineer Andrew Kisaka, highlighted numerous benefits of DSB. He emphasized the focus on making affordable receivers available, ensuring seamless transition for listeners.
Industry seasoned broadcast engineer Sunday Nkayamba expressed optimism about DSB's potential to reshape the industry, encouraging broadcasters to adapt their business models and create high-quality content to thrive in the competitive landscape.
The ABC conference also addressed concerns regarding declining broadcasting ethics. Seasoned media professionals who were represented at the meeting urged contemporary content providers to uphold ethical standards and Tanzanian values. Wakongwe wa RTD, representing veteran broadcasters, called for Government intervention through TCRA to remain firm in restoring ethical practices in broadcasting.
The conference concluded with a strong commitment to fostering collaboration between stakeholders broadcasters, regulators, and media professionals – to ensure the success of DSB implementation and continued growth of Tanzania's vibrant broadcasting sector. By working together, they can ensure that Tanzanians enjoy access to high-quality, informative, and ethically sound content delivered through the latest technology.
